PATHWAYS TO CHOICE
with Tommy Thompson
23-25 August 2024
Among numerous meritorious benefits, the Alexander principle facilitates our conundrum in dealing with habit and change. This allows us to successfully make non habitual choices given Alexander’s concept of Inhibition as the path to follow. For him Inhibition plays a major role in downplaying reaction, thereby facilitating choosing a more appropriate and reasoned response. If successfully achieved then…
-
A choice is made more appropriate to the circumstance.

-
We are free to choose what we might not have chosen before.

-
We can change our behavior.
Yet do we actually have free will?

Do ‘we’ make choices?
Neuroscience would have us question that premise believing that the brain does the choosing. However, we do register the intent to act. It’s just that the brain organizes our whole neuromuscular mind-body fascial self around that intention well before we act on the choice we intend. That being said might we say then at least that we are partners in choosing along with the brain?
-
Partners in choice perhaps?
Moreover, perhaps to the degree that our expanded field of attention incorporates an acute and heightened sense of awareness given the circumstance, choice is more or less ‘presented’-not made. This will be our exploration for…
-
Awareness is the silent and choiceless observation of 'what is'.
In this awareness an issue or a eventful happening unfurls itself and therefore is more completely understood before an individual response takes place.
-
A gentle dialogue between individual and brain perhaps?
In this workshop we will explore choiceless awareness governed by ‘Withholding Definition’.
In other words your destiny is ‘now’.

Then perhaps there is such a state of mind, given choiceless awareness to a given response, (a heightened sense of awareness when one is so deeply connected with possibility) that choice is presented not made. One comes into an alignment with choices which may or might not be made because choice in this moment is fluid, not fixed and much united with the way one’s organism is designed to function.
